Advocacy Issues

OECTA defines 'advocacy' as "the act of supporting or recommending certain beliefs or philosophies felt to be beneficial to the common good". On occasion, OECTA Provincial thinks it's necessary to inform its members of current social issues that need to be brought to everyone's attention.

That will be purpose of these emails.

Read them if you'd like, ignore them if you have to, but these e-mails are here to inform you of issues that OECTA believes are advocacy issues – something we, as a Christian and caring group of professionals, need to examine.

ADVOCACY ISSUE #1 The Government and Society's Current Trend to Downgrade the Value of Unions.

Under proposed labour law changes put forward by Tim Hudak and the Ontario Conservatives:

* WORKERS COULD STOP PAYING UNION DUES AND/OR OPT OUT OF UNION MEMBERSHIP

* EMPLOYERS WOULD BE ABLE TO OPT OUT OF COLLECTING UNION DUES FROM PAY CHEQUES

The effect on unions would be devastating and unfair to union members.

This YouTube clip says it best.

ADVOCACY ISSUES #2

Ontario Conservative leader Tim Hudak has announced that he will weaken

unions by making major changes to labour laws – if he wins the next

Ontario election. A blow to the labour movement would hurt the cause of

all people fighting for equality.

The value of unions? Another clip, another point of view (hey, it's a rap this time):
